The last time I mentioned perspective it was triggered by an artistic masterpiece this time it was triggered by a Nicky Gumbel devotional.
How often is our perspective on life darkened by the world around us? Media reports focus us on what’s going wrong in the world. Wars unending – protagonists changing but the horror remains the same. Diseases – some conquered like smallpox, some on the rampage like Covid 19, some always popping up and for a short time devastating like Ebola. Natural disasters – like earthquakes, drought, famine and floods. Yes, we live in a frightening world – it’s always been like that and always will be until Jesus returns – so what can we do?
Sometimes reading a different translation or paraphrase of the Bible can give you a whole new perspective. Take this from The Message
“The world is unprincipled. It’s dog-eat-dog out there! The world doesn’t fight fair. But we don’t live or fight our battles that way—never have and never will. The tools of our trade aren’t for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that entire massively corrupt culture. We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ. Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-6
Thoughts on the tools …….
God-tool 1 – Prayer. We see more prayer answered if we don’t insist God uses our solutions.
God-tool 2 – Gospel. Jesus Christ crucified, resurrected and ascended is the simplest but most powerful message the world can receive.
God-tool 3 – Unity. Unity not uniformity around those able to own “Jesus Christ is Lord” is a powerful witness.
I’ll give Nicky Gumbel the last word “Ultimately it is the ‘message of Christ’ that will change your culture. It is the most powerful message in the world. It is life changing. It is culture changing. It is world changing.”
Verse for Today – “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” 2 Corinthians 10:4 NIVUK
