Thought for the Day – Wednesday 15th April

Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow….  Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.

James 4:13-15 (NIV)

In my younger days I often heard people say “God willing” when talking about future plans, but I rarely hear it (or say it) these days. The current situation has demonstrated very clearly that we are not actually in control of the events in our lives, and so many of the support systems we have in place have turned out to be of little use.

It is a time of great anxiety and fear for many, but also a time for finding innovative ways of caring and keeping in touch, for learning the things that really matter, perhaps renewing our commitment to trust God rather than our own plans.

In the words of the hymn by Albert Smith

I know who holds the future, And He’ll guide me with his hand
With God things don’t just happen, Everything by him is planned.
So as I face tomorrow, With its problems large and small,
I’ll trust the God of miracles, Give to Him my all.
